Beyond academics, the project-based learning (PBL) has become increasingly important and is one of the approaches that schools, especially international schools in Bangkok, are adopting and integrating into their curriculum. Today, with ASB Sukhumvit, you will discover the definition of project based learning (PBL) and explore examples of how schools integrate this approach into their education through various project-based learning projects on these days.
What is ‘Project Based Learning’?
“Project-Based Learning (PBL)” is an educational approach in which students tackle real-world challenges or problems to develop knowledge and skills holistically through project completion, going beyond textbooks and traditional exams.
In PBL, students actively explore and solve complex problems over an extended period, rather than passively receiving information through traditional lectures or rote memorization. Moreover, PBL fosters collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills as students work together to investigate, analyze, and present their findings or solutions. The goal of PBL is to deepen understanding, foster a sense of ownership and autonomy in learning, and prepare them for a brighter future and to become a qualified global citizen.
Advantages of Project Based Learning (PBL)
- Motivation Discovery: Project-based learning serves as a hands-on educational experience, encouraging students to immerse themselves in their unique fields of interest. This immersion further ignites inspiration, motivation, and a lifelong passion for learning.
- Critical Thinking Skills: Within the realm of project-based learning, students are afforded the opportunity to seek out information, conduct analyses, and bring their projects to fruition. This process fosters the development of critical thinking skills over time.
- Creative and Innovative Mindsets: By delving into topics of personal interest, students are more inclined to cultivate creative and innovative mindsets, seeking approaches to make their projects stand out.
- Collaboration and Communication: Engaging in project-based learning often involves students working in groups, where they learn the vital skills of collaboration and effective communication, extending beyond their immediate peer group to establish a conducive work environment.
- Connections to the Real World: At ASB Sukhumvit, we not only advocate for project-based learning but also emphasize its significance in making projects meaningful and relevant to the communities students inhabit. This not only grounds them in reality but also fosters empathy towards others.
- Leadership & Ownership Mindsets: Within project-based learning initiatives, students are encouraged to assume leadership roles within their groups, fostering ownership of their selected projects.
- Problem-solving Skills: As students encounter challenges throughout their project-based learning journey, they naturally develop and refine their problem-solving abilities, enabling them to devise strategic solutions.
- Multidisciplinary Learning: Project-based learning transcends the confines of specific school subjects. Throughout the process, students engage with and apply knowledge from various disciplines to ensure the success of their endeavors.
- Pathway to a Lifelong Learner: Project-based learning stands as a creative avenue to acquiring both knowledge and life skills, nurturing a passion and enduring love for learning that extends throughout one’s lifetime.
- Sense of Achievement and Confidence: Successfully completing projects through project-based learning instills a profound sense of achievement and bolsters students’ confidence in their abilities. This, in turn, motivates them to confront new challenges and pursue further learning opportunities in today’s dynamic world
