Foundational English Program (FEP)

Being a school with a culturally diverse student body, some of XCL American School of Bangkok students’ first language may not be English. As such, the school offers an excellent Foundational English Program (FEP) to help international students to acquire the basic social and academic language necessary for success in a rigorous, English language academic environment. This will help accelerate their learning in the core areas of reading, speaking, and listening, with the ultimate goal of helping prepare students in Grade 6 to Grade 8 to reach a level of proficiency to access learning in the school’s ELL classes and to mainstream classes as quickly as possible.

Why FEP is great for your child ?

Low student-teacher ratio and level-based placements

FEP classes will have a maximum of 14 students per class. This allows for more interaction between teacher and students, as well as more personalised one-to-one instructions should the need arise. Students will also be learning alongside their peers of similar proficiency levels in reading, listening, writing, and speaking
This way, teachers will be able to provide more targeted and intensive support based on their strengths and areas for improvement.

Various subjects and extra-curricular activities will be built into the timetable

FEP integrates mainstream class content and vocabulary, aligning with XCL ASB's teaching standards. To enhance language mastery, the program incorporates diverse subjects and extracurricular activities such as Mathematics, Art, Physical Education, Design, Esports, and more. This approach exposes students to English in relevant contexts, fostering a well-rounded education that supports their academic, social, emotional, and physical well-being.

Students' progress will be measured and reported every step of the way.

The WIDA MODEL measures English proficiency, guiding assessments and keeping students and parents informed through continuous updates. Using WIDA and MAP assessments, teachers actively monitor students for ELL and mainstream class enrollment. The standard completion timeline is two semesters, but the academic team, remaining flexible, engages in a dialogue with parents to determine the best course of action for each student. Parents should note that completing two semesters in the FEP doesn't guarantee entry into ASB ELL or regular programs.
Parents and guardians should be aware that completing two FEP semesters doesn't guarantee entry into ASB ELL or regular programs.
